“I have to leave a bit early. I—uh, have an extra study session to go to in the library! Just be sure to finish the training regimen!” Makoto gets out of the pool to go over to the outdoor shower, quickly washing off the chlorine from his body. He hastily makes his way to the changing room, leaving the others confused.

“Last week, Rei-kun was leaving swim team practice early because he was secretly training with nii-san. It’s a new week and now Makoto-senpai is leaving early?” Gou sighs. “I hope it’s just for today.”

“Gou-chan, what if unlike Rei-chan... maybe Mako-chan is actually in love?” Nagisa ponders.

Gou’s eyebrow twitches at Nagisa calling her ‘Gou’ but taps her chin. Her eyes widen in realization as she remembers Makoto didn’t show up for lunch either. “Haruka-senpai, did Makoto-senpai tell you where he went during lunch?”

“Actually… he didn't. I did see him with ____-san earlier,” Haruka says as he turns around to stare at the pool.

“EH?!” everyone says in unison.

Nagisa is surprised by the newfound evidence of Makoto’s leave. “He was hanging out with ____-senpai?! I thought she was busy preparing for applications to a foreign university?”

Haruka sighs, “I don’t know anything. You should ask him yourself.”

“Maybe Gou-chan is right, Mako-chan is in loooove… with ____-senpai, nonetheless!” Nagisa explains.

“So does this mean swim team practice is over for today?” Rei crosses his arms, a bit disappointed with the shortened meeting for the day.

“I’m afraid so. Haruka-senpai is already heading to the showers. I suppose you guys should too,” Gou sighs, exasperated with the distractions that’s been going on lately.

“Are you sure it’s okay? I heard what happened to Ryugazaki-kun last week,” you look at Makoto with concern.

He warmly smiles as he puts back a university guide book, “Didn’t you say that you don’t qualify for the top university of your choice?”

“It’s not that I don’t qualify, I don’t have the best grades or the financial stability to attend. I have to be realistic so now I’m thinking of other universities to go to here in Japan. That’s why I kinda need your help,” you groan and close the reference book you were looking at, placing it back on the shelf. “So Makoto, did you have a university in mind?”

“I never really gave it a thought. Maybe something local, like Iwatobi University,” Makoto answers while fidgeting with his tie, “I kind of hope that we end up at the same university.”

“At this rate we probably will,” you say as you grab your belongings. “Can we walk home together for today? It’s been so long since we’ve last done that… and we’re next door neighbors for crying out loud.”

Makoto suddenly blushes as puts on his backpack, walking down the hall with you, “You're right. It has been a while. Walking home together makes me happy.”

You start to blush as well as silence takes over. You instinctively move closer to Makoto as you both walk towards your neighborhood. You muster up enough confidence to take advantage of the situation and bring up an old topic.

“Makoto, the last time you were this close to me was in middle school. You rejected me back then,” you softly say.

“I don’t remember rejecting you,” he says while you both walk down the street near the beach. Suddenly he stutters, “Y-You had feelings for me?”

“Of course I did. I wasn’t exactly shy about my feelings for you back then. I…” you don’t complete your sentence as you suddenly stop walking.

“Huh?” he turns around, worry evident in his eyes as he slowly starts walking back towards you, “Are you okay?”

“I’m such an idiot. You have more important things to do than deal with me. I shouldn’t have asked you to leave your practice early. I’m such a distraction,” you softly say, trying your best to stay strong in front of him as you deeply bow, “I’m sorry.”

“You’re wrong, you know?” Makoto chuckles a little, grabbing ahold of your shoulders to ensure you’re standing straight and not bowing anymore. He pulls you into his arms. “You’re not a distraction. You’re one of my closest friends, and I’m really sorry I haven’t put in enough effort into our friendship ever since the swim team was re-established last year. All this time I’ve neglected you and your feelings.”

You’re in shock at Makoto’s compassion for you. You did not expect this sort of reaction coming from him whatsoever. You lower your head as tears slowly trickle down your cheeks, disappointed in showing this side of yourself to Makoto.

He lifts your chin so you’re both looking directly at each other. He smiles at you again, cupping your face as he wipes away the tears staining your cheeks with his thumbs. “You’ll never be a distraction for me. Remember that, okay?”

You nod in response as he lets go of you. You’re caught by surprise as he kisses your forehead as you wipe the remaining tears with the back of your hand. You watch him start walking ahead of you as you question his motives, “M-Makoto? What are you doing?”

“If you still feel the same way for me like back then… just so you know the feeling’s mutual,” Makoto turns around and holds out his hand, waiting for you to go over to him.

You nod and smile in response, quickly walking over and placing your hand in his. Makoto blushes as he laces his fingers with yours. You blush as well as you both head home. This soon becomes routine every afternoon; you provide support for the swim team after your study sessions and end up going home with Makoto, sometimes in the company of your friends. Makoto makes an effort to invite you over to his house more frequently despite the constant eagerness from his younger siblings to play with them. Needless to say, Makoto is always first to remind you that you’re never a distraction and that he’s forever grateful for having you in his life.

EPILOGUE;
Before you go further into the future let’s continue on that first day you and Makoto became ‘more than friends’.

You and Makoto stop in front of your house. Letting go of his hand, you turn towards the front of your door and start scrambling for your keys. Makoto tilts his head in confusion, hoping to receive a proper goodbye from you. “____-chan?”

“What is it?” you ask, busy with looking for your house keys in your schoolbag.

“____-chan…” he pouts, taking a few steps closer.

“What is it Makoto…?” you turn around to face him and drop your keys as he kisses your lips.

“Onii-chan is kissing ___-nee-chan!” Ran shouts as she witnesses her older brother kissing you.

“I want to kiss her, too!” Ren frowns as he and Ran are pushed back inside the Tachibana household by their mother.

“Now, now… we should leave them be,” Mrs. Tachibana says as she closes the door once the younger Tachibana children are inside.

You stifle a laugh as you both pull away from the kiss, “I wasn’t expecting for them to see that.”

Makoto reddens, “I guess I know what will be the topic for dinner tonight.”

Your eyes widen as you see your parents standing around the corner in shock, “Oh, crap… same here.”
